Especially if it's just CSS you're doing. But when you get around to swapping out graphics and junk: A) You won't lose your modifications when the theme updates down the road. B) If you mess something up, it's easy to wipe the slate clean and start over. I've lost entire swaths of hacks I've implemented to make a theme perfect when the theme updated. A) You won’t lose your modifications when the theme updates down the road.
B) If you mess something up, it’s easy to wipe the slate clean and start over.

I’ve lost entire swaths of hacks I’ve implemented to make a theme perfect when the theme updated. And it was always a theme I liked very much up until then.
